Well as we finally reach the first of December tomorrow and wake up to open the first window on are advent calendars to officially start of the christmas season. Christmas has already been around on a daily basis for the past month since halloween ended and we turned over are calendars to the first of November, where shops in just one night had a magical transformation from the fake cobwebs and skulls to the sparkling, dazzling winter wonderland that we associate with the festive season and theres nothing more festive than the long awaited realise of christmas adverts. In particular there is one advert that has stood out above the rest for me this year and that is the Burberry advert entitled 'A tale of Thomas Burberry'.

For, I would say the past number of years the John Lewis advert has always been top of the pack for me with their heart warming festive tales that normally include numerous woodland creatures, but this year it hasn't really captured me there is only so many times you find woodland creatures interesting or cute and at the minute they seem to be everywhere. Which is why I think the Burberry advert works really well, its not your stereotypical advert, it tells a story, theres meaning and history behind it leaving you with a feeling of wanting to know more.
I can describe it to you, all you want but your probably best watching it for yourself, trust me its one not to be missed;

Everything within this advert as been carefully thought out from the music selection that gradually builds throughout. Starting of quite soft with long continuous notes and then as the singer starts it begins to becoming more dramatic and powerful as the tale of advert develops; this also coincides with what seems to be a love triangle between Thomas Burberry played by Domhnall Gleeson and the two female characters his fictional first love Sara played by Sienna Miller and Lily James as Betty Kirby-Green the record breaking pilot the flew from England to Cape town in 'The Burberry' plane, now we don't know if any of this is true but it does in a way make you believe it.
The narrative is key to this short film, it covers the main events at the start of the brands history. The creation of the material Gabardine which at the time was revolutionary as it was breathable and waterproof; a fabric that is still used in there trench coat today, it also shows the development of the trench coat which was designed in the 20th century for the military with the original design beginning as a Tielocken- unbuttoned, fastened at the waist. It also features the character of Sir Ernest Shackleton (played by Dominic West) who was a acclaimed polar explore wearing Burberry Gabardine on three expeditions with the film focusing in his endurance expedition in 1914 and finally the character Betty Kirby-Green who alongside Flying Officer Arthur Clouston broke the world record for a return flight from London to Cape Town in 1937 with the blue jumpsuit in the film being based on images from the Burberry Archive.

This advert is truly unique, it leaves you on a cliff hanger, its not just an advert that you will notice in the background as you go about, doing other things, it makes you stop, pause for a moment (well 3 minutes) and take every single part of it in. It has an intensity about it, rather than an advert it is more like a film trailer giving you a small taste of whats to come and if I'm honest if this was a movie I would definitely be paying a visit to watch it.
The producers and creators behind the advert have managed to achieve something that I, personally haven't seen in an advert before they have made something that truly mesmerises you but at the same time is educating without you realising it. I knew that Burberry was the designer behind the trench coat and that they were used in the war but I never knew before watching this short film that they provided clothing for Shackleton or Betty Kirby-Green. It both has a purpose and Entertains.
