Pepsi has got the world talking, but for the wrong reasons

If you haven't heard anything about this advert in the past 48 hours, then wear have you been? Everyone’s been talking about it but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons, to say Pepsi haven't hit the mark with this advert is an understatement in fact they were far from it.

My first view of this is advert left be extremely confused, what exactly were Pepsi trying to say or communicate to the consumer, well apparently that a cooed can of refreshing Pepsi can solve all the world’s problems.

I don't think so

Instead the 2-and-a-half-minute long advertisement featuring Kendall Jenner has been accused of undermining the black lives matter movement. For those who have not seen the advert, it shows the KUWTK star leaving a photoshoot located on some tropical, exotic location to join a passing protest after being invited by another activist. The star is then seen going up to a line of police and diffusing tension by offering one of the officers a can of Pepsi. Apart from the sheer mockery of resistance movements, featuring an over privileged, young white model from a reality tv show just adds to the joke that is this controversial advert.

With advertisement playing a big part in my university course I decide to look at some of the brands past adverts. and wow what can I say, cheese on toast anyone with an extra side of cheese maybe.

The first thing that I noticed is that it must be impossible for the brains behind the advertising within the brand to even get the go ahead unless they mention at least one potential celebrity that they will have making appearance since most of their advertisements to date feature a number of famous faces. Yet I feel that as a member of society we only have are selves to blame for this since we as consumers are quite often influenced by a famous face trying to sell us a product.

And although Kendall Jenner is yet to comment on the advertisement, the brand has apologized to the 21-year-old "We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position." But wait, don't get me wrong here but I'm pretty sure miss Jenner is an educated woman how would of been aware of the concept and message behind the brand, she would of know the position she was putting herself in so I don't personally that the brand owes her an apology. Now whether it was an educated decision by the star or just an opportunity to further her career the star wasn't exactly forced into taking part in the ad now was she?

Now Pepsi aren't known for their particularly amazing advertisements in my personal opinion I will go as far to say they have never really hit the mark. Two of my favorite examples of this are there 2004 advert based around a football game set in a medieval village and a few years later the we will rock you advert.

So let’s just clear things up someone within Pepsi must clearly love history, either that or they just got a good deal at a fancy dress shop for period costumes.

Anyway let’s talk about them a little more

So in true Pepsi style with the 2004 we play spot the famous person, Beckham, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos and Totti (apparently all football players) appear to be coming to the aid of a village under siege by playing a game of football. Yes, football, apparently creating a fight over Pepsi. What I would look to know is what relevance does this even have, like football, Pepsi and medieval what is this relationship trying to communicate, lord only knows.

and then 'we have the we will rock you' advertisement that was realized a few years later with Beyonce, Pink and Britney Spears acting the part of three gladiators who are about to fight to the death in a roman coliseum in front of the master Enrique Inglesaias, but they refuse to fight and instead break out in 'we will rock you' by queen again in what context is this relevant.

I'm just so confused do they have any idea on what they are trying to communicate here or what

Anyway before I leave this post, I'll go back to the incriminating advert in question, what I want to know is why when we are in a world where people flee for their lives, because they live in fear on a daily basis did they even think this was great idea to begin with, well according to Pepsi the aims to send a message of "unity, peace and understanding" no I'm sorry but it doesn't not convey any of this in the slightest, if they really wanted to try and support these worldwide issues through the advertisement then do something more productive that will actual help, rather than create anger, and up raw.

Stop using real life issues, that effect real lives to try and sell your refreshingly cold can on PEPSI.
