Planning for the photoshoot

Degraded Glamour, Intimate, Grunge, Raw, Isolated

The five words that we used to influence are photoshoot for the outcome of the execution brief after looking at the 'Let's dance' editorial from vogue may 2004. All of these words are what came to mind when we looked at and analysed the images and when we also thought of Corinne Day's other work.

It may seem that without looking at the editorial itself that these words are quite an odd selection so if you haven't already then why don't you go and check out my previous post 'Let's Dance - Vogue' before you read any further it might help you to make a little more sense of this post ...

so why did we choose these key words, well;

Intimate;

why? - when you look at the image almost half of them are shot backstage of a theatre, that normally only the performers and production staff would have access to where they escape the spotlight, it's very strange for this area to be photographed or seen but with Day using it, it makes the shoot more personal.

Raw;

Why? - this is more to do with the editing/ actual physical image rather than any of the staging or concept behind the shoot. Much, well all of Days photographs have quite an unedited feel to them very little evidence of any post editing, leaving them in the rawest form almost as though they have been taken using a disposable camera.

Isolated;

why? - within all the images there is the same model used as the main focus (most likely the star of the show) but in the images where she is in a group with the other performers/ models, she is the only one looking at the camera while the others are looking at each other as if in group discussion. The message that we as a group got from this is that although she being portrayed as the star of the show she maybe isn't liked by the others for this reason.

Degraded Glamour;

why? - pretty much what is sounds like, its glamour but not the sterotypical glamour. Now with in the photoshoot they focus on dresses in particular evening dressing but the environment that these dresses are captured in, within the photoshoot are very dark, poorly lit giving a run down feeling which is where we have got the sense of degraded glamour from.

Grunge;

Why? - the key characteristics of grunge are comfort, carelessness and layering which are things that we will probably consider more when it comes to the styling elements of the shoot. It also features details such as being worn out and sloppy, which can be seen within the back stage images where the models are relaxed they aren't dressed up, their body positions slumped they aren't in a spotlight so they don't care how they look.

Sadly I won't be there for the actual photoshoot as I'm back home for the weekend, but I wanted to leave my group in a position where they are prepared, knowing exactly what they have to do from the models body position, styling, make up, lighting etc. In the last group meeting we tried to cover all the basis so that they could just get straight into it without any last minute panic.

The accessory that my group had to incorporate within the photoshoot was make up now this seemed like it would be quite easy to include as the model will most likely be wearing it anyway but we had some conflicting ideas. When you looked at the editorial images the models only have natural make up looks nothing over the top like stage make up but what made this look more than it actually is, was the lighting used that highlighted key features so the first idea that we had was to go over the top on highlighter we all agreed on this but an issue that we had was how it would photograph since we probably wouldn't have access to lighting equipment.

So what other ways could we include it ...

Maybe just focus solely on the make up products, not including a model at all; now this could be used as a last measure but the idea I liked was to contour the models face using coloured make up. When we had researched into the make up artist from the Corinne Day shoot she has previously done similar looks to this so we thought that it would be quite a good connection but also there are pops of colours within the editorial that really stand out.

Corinne Day as a photographer had a strong relationship to Kate Moss, something that are lecture Tim had to say about this really struck a spark with are ideas 'Look at Kate Moss, Days most iconic muse and her relation with drugs, what does powder look like when it's broken, what's liquid like and what could represent a needle' this got us thinking the main idea for the photoshoot started to develop with the concept of a party looking at all elements from how the night started to how it ended.

'A Blurred Night out as a Student'

As if it has been captured on snapchat like most students remember their nights but instead we will look at including things that could happen that aren't necessarily made public, the intimate side of the shoot, will will not overly stage the photographs the raw element, to capture the grunge concept we will look at how lighting is used almost all dark and dull with brighter light in other areas, Isolated will take the same form as the editorial one main person always looking at the camera and finally Degraded glamour will be the styling, it will be a night out but a normal student night there will be something off about it.

these are some of the thoughts that will help towards are photoshoot, I'll show you the end results once they are all finished.
