Appointed on the 23rd of January 1992 today, the British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman has announced today, that she will be stepping down from the position after a quarter of a century.

Vogue is my go to magazine if I need inspiration I'll almost 99% of the time find it within its contents, if I just want some me time I'll lose myself between its glossy pages, there's nothing I love more than delving into the magazine each month with that straight of the press kind of smell (similar to the smell of a new book but even better in my opinion).

At the time of her appointment into the position the then managing direct said "Vogue is almost in her blood" beside the fact that both her parents and brother had worked for the magazine this couldn't be a more truthful statement, she stands out amongst other editors; she isn't tall she isn't skinny she just dresses like she's just walked off the runway, she the complete opposite a down to either woman who is just passionate about what she does. It isn't just her appearance that has made her such an icon of the fashion world but her beliefs;

She championed British models, so many people within the industry have a wonderful take on fashion but Alexandra looked past this, with a great eye for a story rather than just styling.

She believed in British fashion as a brand, during her time as editor she saw it grow in stature and is now acknowledge for its creativity rather than just something crazy.

she brought the reader closer to the fashion world, during her 25 years at the publication British Vogue has become one of the leading publications in the world, she supports young designers through initiatives such as BFC and Vogue designer fashion fund.

she has a genuine sense of respect, a lot of magazines are drive by the nature and character of their editors and this it was has defined British Vogue for the past 25 years, it will be interesting to see where the magazine goes now as a new editor steps into the position.

and finally, she wanted to broaden what fashion could do, she promoted a range of beauty and body images through the magazine always seeing the bigger picture; although fashion can be viewed as superficial it feeds into larger issues, people's sense of identity and self-esteem.

With the fashion world paying tribute to this amazing and influentially editor, who left such a grander as it was exactly 25 years and one since she first step foot in the office with a new job role. It is indicated that recent adventures outside of the publication are the reason for her departure; A BBC documentary 'absolutely fashion' and a booked entitled 'Inside Vogue: a diary of my 100th year'.

“I realized that I very much wanted to experience a different life and look forward to a future separate to Vogue,” she said.

Whilst in the position at Vogue the circulation of the magazine has increased by 12% to 195,053, being a champion for both British and London fashion week which are now one of the big four events in the fashion calendar.

It will be very interesting to see what the future hold for the publication, I am both excited and a little unsure about this but it is something that I mostly look forward to seeing (and reading)
