That's an odd smell! ...

we go through are lives on a daily basis absorbing smells but never really appetite them. But every so often there will come a scent/ fragrance that truly captures you, creating a ever lasting memory that whenever you come into contact with that scent it will take you to a different place.

While out conducting primary research for my new brief the 'Fragrance Brand Project' I came across a brand that I had never seen or noticed before but one with a very unique take on what we typically associate with fragrance/ perfume.

The brand is called 'The Library of Fragrance' produced by New York based company 'Demeter Fragrance Library' the first thing that stands out to me is that by including the word 'Library' it instantly gives you the impression that they have a whole host of fragrance to offer, as if they have been around of decades allowing them to build a vast portfolio of scents generated from a range of different inspirations.

The original mission of the brand "was to capture the beautiful smells of the garden and nature in wearable form", most fragrances today are either very sweet with floral notes or quite musky smells that very sophisticated whereas this brand has really found a unique smelling point that isn't often catered too. Instead of trying to force a smell they take inspiration from what already exists such as nature, which relates back to the brands name Demeter is the greek goddess of the earth, of agriculture and of fertility in general; by using a greek goddess as part of the brand image it give a more appealing, desirable factor.

'The Library of Fragrance' offer a broad range of smells, no matter how odd or unusual they may seem but without it being comical there is also quite a fun element to each of the scents because they are so bizarre and unexpected, offering a diverse library of products that you would not find in the traditional perfume houses or designer brands.

" because overtime you smell something you love, you smile. And the world needs more smile, it is just that simple, and that difficult: we believe people can change the way they feel, through scent"

What if think drew me to this brand other than the fragrances themselves, was the way in which they have packaged the scent. Where most brands use quite an artist bottle, with maybe some slight colouring to the glass, geometric silhouettes or engraving etc. 'The Library of Fragrance' take a more simplistic approach with quite a classic, traditional bottle with a greater focus on the scent contained within rather than its actual appearance, although it is still quite captivating and pleasing to the eye of the consumer. Aside from the packing the label on the bottle mirrors its simplistic form.

They have used a elegant yet at the same time simple font, that does not necessarily stand out, but against the simple white background that suggests cleanliness and purity which I think is quite a cleaver choice considering it is a fragrance product offering the opinion that it is not to empowering or strong scented. In fact the only thing that truly adds character to this design is a coloured band on the front of the bottle that represents the individual scent.

On thing that I think makes this brand stand out as a fragrance brand is that they give you the option to either wear a scent on its own or you can actually use 2 or 3 scents etc at a time to create your own bespoke fragrance. They describe their scents as "single-note fragrances, which means that the express a single, identifiable smell or idea" this is whats allows them to be built together to a fragrance that suits the consumer.

They have a broad range of fragrances these are just a few;

Baby Powder, Black Pepper, Bonfire, Caribbean Sea, Cherry Blossom, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Christmas in New York, Clean Skin, Daisy, Rain, Marshmallow, Ocean, Pixie Dust, Sunshine, Thunder storm.

In total they have over 300 unique fragrances with 101 available in the Uk.

Smelling a few of these scents myself there was one that really stood out to me 'Thunder storm', at first

I was quite taken back by the scent much like most of the fragrances in the collection as I really wasn't expecting it to literally smell like the scent it is depicting, but it was such a recognisable smell; putting it blankly it smelt as if I was outside just after a thunder storm (since I personally would never be outside in a thunder storm).
